Focus RS: A Mustang Guy's Perspective
An Amazing Daily Driver & Weekend Hot Hatch

As a long-time Mustang enthusiast, getting behind the wheel of a Ford Focus RS for a few days was an eye-opening experience. While these two vehicles cater to different audiences, the Focus RS holds its own as an impressive performance machine. Here are my detailed impressions after spending some quality time with this all-wheel-drive hot hatch.

All-Wheel Drive: A Game-Changer

From the moment I pressed the gas pedal, it was clear that the Focus RS’s all-wheel-drive system is no joke. Paired with sticky Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R tires, the car grips the road with unwavering confidence. Launching from a standstill or carving through corners, the AWD system delivers power seamlessly to all four wheels, making it a completely different experience from the rear-wheel-drive setup I’m used to in the Mustang.

Power and Performance

The Focus RS shares the same 2.3L EcoBoost engine found in the Mustang, but it feels like a different beast entirely. Unlike my stock EcoBoost Mustang, which struggled at higher RPMs, the RS pulls hard even north of 5,000 RPM. The power delivery is smooth, and the additional tuning and engineering upgrades make the engine feel more responsive and robust. It’s a pleasant surprise to see how potent this little turbocharged engine can be when optimized.

The Suspension: Stiff & Stiffer

If you’re looking for a comfortable daily driver, the Focus RS might not be the car for you. The suspension offers two settings: stiff and really stiff. Even in the less aggressive setting, you’ll feel every bump and crack in the road. That said, this rigid setup translates into unparalleled handling precision, making it a joy on twisty backroads or the track. The trade-off is worth it for those who prioritize performance over comfort.

Brembo Brakes: Stop on a Dime

The Brembo brake setup on the Focus RS is another standout feature. They grab hard and provide excellent feedback, giving you the confidence to push the car to its limits. While I didn’t get the chance to test them during extended track use, they’re undoubtedly up to the task for spirited driving sessions. It’s a level of stopping power that Mustang owners would appreciate.

Handling: Unmatched Precision

Despite its 3,500-pound curb weight, the Focus RS feels light and agile. The combination of its quick steering, grippy tires, and well-tuned chassis makes it a weapon in the corners. The car goes exactly where you point it, inspiring confidence even during aggressive maneuvers. It’s a handling experience that rivals some of the best performance cars in this segment.

Quirky but Cool Features

One of the unexpectedly cool features is the adaptive headlights. They’re not something you’d typically associate with a performance-focused vehicle, but they add a layer of practicality and safety. Another fun detail is the artificial exhaust pops and burbles on deceleration. While technically fake, they add a sense of drama that enhances the overall driving experience.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, the Focus RS is still a Ford Focus, but it’s a Focus reimagined by Ford Performance. It combines practicality with high performance in a way that’s hard to ignore. While it’s not as raw or visceral as a Mustang, it brings its own unique flavor to the table.

If you’re a Mustang owner looking for something different—or even a complement to your stable—the Focus RS is worth considering. It’s a car that excels in areas where the Mustang doesn’t, offering a driving experience that’s as thrilling as it is capable. A big thank you to my good friend Zach Straits for giving me the chance to experience this incredible machine!
