2018 Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2
A Thrilling Upgrade

Since posting my thoughts on the Focus RS last week, several of you asked for more insights into the 2018 Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2 (PP2) I drove a few months back. Having owned a 2015 Mustang GT and driven the 2018 GT Performance Pack 1 (PP1) in both manual and automatic configurations, I came into this experience with a unique perspective.

First Impressions

The PP2’s stance is the first thing that grabs your attention. With wide wheels and a purposeful squat, it exudes a sense of readiness. Unlike superficial upgrades like fake hood scoops, the PP2’s design enhancements are functional, making it clear that this car is built to perform. Every detail contributes to this mission, from the front splitter to the aggressive wheel setup.

Functional Design Enhancements

Subtle but purposeful touches define the PP2. The front splitter adds 24 pounds of downforce at 80 mph, improving high-speed stability. Paired with the rear spoiler, the car maintains balanced handling. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires provide exceptional grip but come with limited tread life, making them ideal for performance driving rather than daily use. Paint protection film is a must-have for safeguarding against road debris.

Driving Dynamics

The PP2’s chassis upgrades immediately make themselves known. Stiffening elements, paired with the MagneRide suspension, deliver a planted, confident feel. While MagneRide smooths out bumps, the overall setup is firmer than the PP1, thanks to the Cup 2 tires’ stiff sidewalls. This results in sharper steering response and precision.

Taking the PP2 through tight corners is exhilarating. The steering is heavier and highly communicative, providing excellent feedback. The improved clutch and shifter mechanics from the 2018 models shine even brighter in the PP2.

A Bridge Between the GT PP1 and GT350

The PP2 effectively bridges the gap between the GT PP1 and GT350. It’s a significant upgrade from the standard GT, offering a unique driving experience that balances predictability with thrilling performance. For those considering the PP1 with MagneRide, the additional $810 for the PP2 is well worth it. The driving dynamics elevate the car into a category of its own.

Final Thoughts

The PP2 is more than an incremental upgrade—it’s a transformation. For Mustang enthusiasts, it sets a new standard for what the GT can achieve in terms of handling, responsiveness, and refinement. As a 2015 GT owner, I couldn’t help but feel my car pales in comparison.

While the PP1 with a 10-speed automatic is ideal for straight-line performance, the PP2 is unmatched for cornering prowess and a track-ready feel. It’s a perfect contender to challenge the Camaro SS 1LE, and I can’t wait to see comparisons between the two.

Driving the PP2 was unforgettable. Ford has truly outdone themselves, making this package a top choice for performance-oriented enthusiasts. If you’re looking for a pony car that excels on the track and in spirited driving, the PP2 should be at the top of your list.
